In this two-day course, Peer and Family Support employees will gain invaluable knowledge and develop critical intervention skills to support individuals re-entering the community after incarceration.

After this course, you will be able to...

  • Illustrate how peer and family support can effectively help reduce recidivism by facilitating successful reentry of the individuals served
  • Outline the workings of the criminal justice system at the federal, state, and local levels
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions available to peer and family support at various points of contact
  • Analyze the unique challenges and opportunities of reentry after incarceration
  • Interpret the nuances culture and demographics have on providing peer and family support
  • Explain the relationship between trauma-informed care and involvement in the criminal justice system
  • Discuss the challenges and opportunities inherent in an individual's forensic history
  • Determine the importance of intervention at the moment of release
  • Formulate how to support individuals as they navigate their interactions with courts, judges, law enforcement, parole, and legal representation 
  • Distinguish how to best support individuals in their relationships with friends and family
