  • Discuss how the opioid epidemic began and why it has been so difficult to help people who struggle with it

  • Use high-end cultural competencies to reach out and build rapport with people who need your support around opioid use

  • Utilize the principles of trauma informed care to support people who feel trapped by their opioid use

  • Differentiate the ways the brain responds to opioid use compared to other substances, and why that matters in intervention and treatment

  • Explain the principles of medication assisted treatment (MAT) that is available to people who struggle with opioid use

  • Utilize the principles of harm-reduction to help a person reduce the inherent danger of an opioid overdose

  • Identify signs of a potential opioid overdose and how to administer naloxone, the emergency overdose prevention medication

  • Use a clear message of hope, love, and support as people move along their recovery journey
